Welcome back to Tie-lopnik, where I tie my tie a certain way and tell you about it! Today, we keep it classy and conventional with the half Windsor knot. The half windsor is essentially half of a double Windsor, and is thus smaller and less symmetrical. I consider the half Windsor similar to the four-in-hand, except better in every way. If your go-to knot is the four-in-hand, it may be worth it for you to learn this one and make the switch. Not huge, not flashy, the half Windsor is a versatile knot and acceptable at any occasion.
Half Windsor:
Advantages- Simple, classy, appropriate for any occasion, better than a four-in-hand, works with any pattern tie
Disadvantages- Pretty common, not as cool as a Shelby, doesn't really make a statement, can look diminutive on ties made of thin material

The Half Windsor is my "go-to" knot if I'm in a hurry, it's a classic that hardly ever goes wrong.

Sadly...won't be joining on today's tielopnik. Follow-up photo whenever I get away from the desk to go tie my tie....

HOW HAVE I KNOT SEEN THESE UNTIL NOW (see what I did there?)
I've got about 40 ties, but my new job discourages wearing them. Le sigh .

I post a new volume of Tie-lopnik every weekday in the AM. Maybe you're too tie-ered to check Oppo in the mornings!

Yep. I just don't wear it often because I always substitute a Shelby.

i've never heard of that but I just googled it and it looks like it's the same as the Eldredge knot. No easy way to tie that one. That and the Trinity are the two hardest, imo.

Using any Windsor knot with a regular tie makes you look like a footballer. They're really only for use with the thinnest of knitted silk ties, where a four-in-hand pretty much disappears into a tiny ball.

I had an office job about 10 years ago, where the dress code was super casual. This asshole thought he was making a statement by suiting up every day. The owner calls him in the office one day "You look like the motherfucking IRS, you wear a suit again and you are fired"... it was somewhat glorious. He didn't last much longer

This is my knot of choice today. What a coincidence.

Jebus. My 2nd-to-last job required a tie every day, and my next was optional. My current job seems casual - jeans are OK just no tee shirts or the like.

did you take the new job BTW? the one with the longer commute?

Yes I did - it's about 60 minutes in and 65-70 minutes home, which isn't bad at all. No traffic on the way home and I'm hitting about 27-28mpg from my 330Ci. Hopefully I can keep the projects coming in to justify me staying here (already have 8 on my plate!).

It's not a convenience/laziness thing for me...I just think the 4ih happens to look best for narrow ties and the shirts you're supposed to wear them with, especially if you can get a good dimple.
I actually like the asymmetry of the 4ih, plus the taller knot with skinny ties and slim fit shirts. If I have a wider collar on and a broader tie, I usually do a half windsor.
